Here is a picture of the pool in the old days,
circa 1968.
The snack bar on the deck (roof on top right) was later replaced
with a concrete block building.
There were NEVER three boards used simultaneously. A clear path was
needed so that divers from the high board could swim safely to the
side.
There was only ever one guard stand though there was usually another
guard in a chair on the other side of the pool in the shallow end.
I don't remember what year the clubhouse was demolished. It didn't
seem to affect the swim team at all, or our enjoyment of the pool,
at least from a kid's perspective.
I've talked to several friends about the pool over the years and we
all realize that it was the center of our lives, and probably kept
some of us out of jail (ha ha). It also provided a focal point for
the community. A time when we knew all our neighbors because
everyone, well everyone with children it seemed, belonged to the
pool.
It is a tragic loss that this wonderful part of our childhood could
not be passed on.
Perhaps, someday, someone will purchase and renovate the pool.
Cheers,
