Some
Tips on Preventing Home Burglaries
Every resident should
be attentive to the security of their personal property,
especially their home and
car. Here are some helpful hints.
1. Get to know your Annapolis Roads neighbors. Exchange
names, phone numbers, and other information that makes your
neighborhood become closer as friends and neighbors.
2. Leave a light on or use a timer for your lights if you
will be away for a full day or longer.
3. Have the post office hold your mail and put your
newspapers on vacation hold while you are away. As an
alternative, ask one of your neighbors, relatives or friends
to bring in your mail and newspapers and keep them for you
until you return.
4. Consider installing a security system. These systems are
more common now and fairly inexpensive to put in. The
companies usually require you to sign a two year agreement.
5. Walk on your street regularly. Get to know which cars
belong with a particular house. Meet neighbors that you have
never talked to before.
6. Write down the license plate numbers and descriptions of
strange vehicles and their occupants. Make a note of the day
and time the vehicle was parked on your street.
7. Do not discuss private details with anyone who comes to
your door trying to sell something or wanting information.
Tell them to leave their card or other contact information on
your front steps or porch and do not open the door until long
after they have gone.
8. Do not leave mail in your mail box to be picked up
later. Take it to the post office or hand it personally to the
carrier.
9. Watch out for your Annapolis Roads neighbors. If you see
someone or something that doesn’t seem right take a closer
look.
10. Do not hesitate to let the police investigate. That's what we pay them for. If one has any suspicions or concerns about any person or their activity, please call 911. The police want to hear from us. They
welcome calls from residents.
If your are reluctant to dial an emergency number, phone this non-emergency police number 410-222-8610 to make any request or report.
Make the call!

MOSQUITO CONTROL/SPRAYING ON WEDS. NIGHTS

Annapolis Roads has signed up for Mosquito Control to prevent any
occurance of mosquito-borne diseases in humans and pets.
The Md Dept of Agriculture will begin monitoring mosquito density in
Annapolis Roads on Weds. night, June 25, 2008, after 7:30 PM. If the
count of the mosquito population warrants eradication, spraying will be
done immediately that night. The mosquito count, and spraying, if
necessary, will continue every Wednesday night after 7:30 PM until
mid-September.
It is recommended that people, especially children and pets, avoid being
outside during spraying. Close windows and doors during spraying.
Avoid scheduling outdoor activities, community events and limit personal
outdoor activities, e.g., gardening, jogging, dog-walking, on spray nights.
An "Ultra Low Volume" (ULV) spray targets adult tiger mosquitoes. The
ULV mosquito "adulticide" is Permethrin mixed with Piperonyl Butoxide
and Mineral Oil in aerosol spray of 0.0036 lbs/acre. That converts to
0.0576 ounces/acre which is why they call it Ultra Low Volume.
Spraying will not be conducted during rain, in wind speeds exceeding 12
MPH, or temperatures above 89 degrees Fahrenheit.
Any resident may request to be excluded from having their property
sprayed, including a surrounding buffer up to 300 foot. They should ask
for the "Request for Exemption from Adult Mosquito Control Services" by
e-mailing their request to Anastasia Hopkinson at president@annapolisroads.net

Owens Smith-Mewha Helps Rehabilitate Young Eagle ARPOA
resident Liz Owens Smith-Mewha recently helped rehabilitate a
young eagle by the name of Surfer Dude (so named for his blond
head feathers). Surfer Dude was first
rehabbed at the Wildlife Rescue, Inc. organization. Liz
reports that "the juvi eagle was ready to be released which is
why I was helping him 'migrate' down to the Pax River Park.
The release went well and he flew like a champ and was
'greeted' by an adult female who heard him calling! This
is the second bald eagle Wildlife Rescue, Inc. has
rehabbed and successfully released this year."

ARPOA's
Position On Proposed City Acquisition of Golf Course
May 16, 2008
Dear Mayor Moyer and Aldermen;
On May 13, County Councilman Joshua Cohen forwarded an
email to Mayor Moyer and the City Council stating that his
decision whether to support or oppose the proposed purchase of
the privately owned Annapolis Roads [AR] Golf Course and the
adjacent 6+ acre supporting “Club House” parcel located in the
center of our community would be based on the decision of his
constituents in the Annapolis Roads Community.
Hence, the Board of Directors of the Annapolis Roads
Property Owners Association [ARPOA] finds it important to
state publicly its position on this proposal by the City of
Annapolis.
Diligent efforts have been made by several residents of
Annapolis Roads to obtain factual information, including
documentation of the representations by the City
Administration that it had executed a contract to purchase the
Annapolis Roads Golf Course. Unfortunately, the information
provided was unsubstantiated, conflicting, confusing, and
incomplete. A detailed chronology of the efforts to obtain
accurate information is provided below, "Chronology of
Information Provided".
Therefore, it is not possible for the ARPOA Board to make
an informed decision. The Board has no alternative other than
to object to this “alleged” purchase since the City
Administration has
[a] failed to comply with the required POS procedures
resulting in revocation of that source of funding by the
County;
[b] failed to fully inform the City Council,
[c] failed to provide any supporting documentation,
including the alleged signed Contract of Sale and Exhibits,
Appraisals, Operational Analysis, Balance Sheets, and the
Application to the Board of Public Works, and
[d] failed to reveal the full funding source in the City
Budget for this purchase.
Further, I feel it important that you hear directly from me
that I have NOT organized a Committee or authorized any
individuals to work with the City Administration on this
proposal. I reiterate that is not possible to commit to such
an effort without being provided sufficient documentation and
adequate facts in which to make an informed decision.
I hope this information assists you in your deliberations.
Respectfully,
Anastasia Hopkinson
President, Annapolis Roads Property Owners Association

Subject: Exercise Caution Following Last Night's Heavy Rainfall
Date: Mon, 12 May 2008 11:25:33 -0400
From: Bea Poulin <bpoulin@aacounty.org>
Dear Community Leaders and Residents,
I am sending you this important message from County Executive Leopold. If you
are in a flood prone area, please be careful not to drive through flooded roads.
You can check tides at this DNR site:
http://www.dnr.state.md.us/fisheries/access/tide_finder.html and on power
outages through Anne Arundel County and the region at
http://www.bge.com/portal/site/bge
If you need emergency assistance, please call 911.
#######
County Executive Urges Residents to Exercise Caution Following Last Night's
Heavy Rainfall
Annapolis (May 12, 2008)-- Following last night's heavy rainfall, County
Executive John R. Leopold advises residents to take appropriate precautions at home and when
traveling around the County throughout the day today. County Executive Leopold
has ordered a partial activation of the County's Emergency Activation Center
(EOC) in response to ongoing weather related emergencies throughout the County.
"Residents should know that some of the most talented and dedicated public
safety personnel are working hard to ensure that the County's roadways are safe
for passage. However, citizens must also exercise caution and do not drive
through flooded roadways," said County Executive Leopold.
Flash flooding can occur quickly and without warning. Low lying areas of the
County are particularly susceptible to flooding for the next few hours when
high-tide is expected and tidal surges are likely. Additionally, more rain is
expected later today. Residents are reminded to never go near downed power
lines or drive through standing water, and pay attention to barricaded or closed
roads. Do not attempt to travel roads that have been closed for the public's safety.
Approximately 15,000 customers are currently without power. If you experience a
power outage, please call BGE at 1-877-778-2222. Don't assume BGE knows. Check
their website to check on outages in Anne Arundel County and beyond at
http://www.bge.com/portal/site/bge/

Construction to begin on New Firehouse
The fire station on Arundel on the Bay recently began
construction in the fall 2007 and is anticipated to be completed by winter 2008.
AACo citizens first requested the firehouse in 1975 and the
County acquired the land at the corner of Bay Ridge Rd. and
Arundel on the Bay Rd. It was approved thirty-one years later,
with the help of Councilwoman Barbara Samorajczyk, in
2006.
It will have three bays for the trucks; and, for the
staff, sleeping quarters, changing rooms, an exercise room and
a kitchen.
